Last Silly Summer Supper of the Season

Silly Summer SupperThe last Silly Summer Supper of the season is this Wednesday, September 9th, at 6:30 PM, immediately following the 6:00 PM service of Evening Prayer. This last gathering will be a potluck supper. A sign-up sheet for potluck donations was posted at the supper on September 2nd. You can sign up on Sunday to bring a dish: a side dish, salad, or dessert, enough to serve half a dozen people or so. The entree will be provided by the church. Everyone who attends the dinner on the 9th will receive a raffle ticket, and half the proceeds from the dinner will be split among six winners drawn from the tickets. The dinner cost is $10 per person.

What is a “side dish”? In India in Anglo Indian English it is “Curry and Rice”. In Standard English I think it is the side plate. English does vary, so please enlighten me.

In the States, it’s generally a vegetable dish, as opposed to a meat dish/entrée. So, for example, a broccoli casserole, or potatoes au gratin, or stuffed mushrooms, or corn pudding, or macaroni and cheese. (Also in contrast to salads, which are generally raw greens–based, but can also include three– (or some other number) bean salad, or a pasta salad (a cold dish, usually with macaroni, rotini or some other small, curly pasta).)
