Superior Summer Suppers 2013

The original "Silly" Summer Suppers featured episodes of British TV comedies as the evening's entertainment. We got out of that habit a couple of years ago, when Bingo took over. This year Bridge has largely supplanted Bingo, and the series has been rechristened "Superior" Summer Suppers—giving due honor to the quality of the meals.

Fall Parish Picnic 2013

The fall Parish Picnic 2013 took place at the lovely home of Ellen Reather on scenic Dulaney Valley Road in Glen Arm, on Sunday, September 8th. The truly bucolic setting featured great food (as you would expect), dips in the pool, and Ellen's flock of sheep—including a visit from Ryan, the bottle–fed and much–pampered lamb.

The Setting Apart of Subdeacon Wiley Hawks

On March 3rd, Wiley Hawks was set apart as Subdeacon by Fr Guy Hawtin, with Fr Michael Kerouac present. The Setting-Aside of Subdeacons is the liturgy St Stephen's uses to welcome laymen to certain specialized ministries (such as being permitted to take consecrated sacraments to the sick and shut-ins). Wiley has already demonstrated a gift for ministering to the sick.

Pancake Supper

St Stephen's annual Shrovetide Pancake Supper featured regular pancakes, English pancakes (they're like crêpes with a lemon sauce, but don't say that too loudly), sausages, and apple sauce—plus butter and syrup, of course. (Blueberries were an option on the regular pancakes.)

St Patrick's Day Supper 2013

As a respite from Lent, St Stephen's celebrated St Patrick's Day eve with a festive supper, featuring corned beef and cabbage, boiled potatoes and dessert, washed down with Harp and Guinness (and soft drinks).

Anne Hawkins's Retirement Party

After thirteen years of dedicated service to this parish as Director of Pastoral Care, Anne Hawkins recently retired. In typical fashion St Stephen's observed the occasion with a party.

Ordering of Deacons

On June 9th, 2013, the Feast of St Columba (Colm Cille), Bishop John Vaughan ordered Michael Belt and John Novicki as Deacons. Choirmaster Adric also presented crosses to two graduating choristers, Alexander Nickol and Dean Philip. The reception following the service was too big for the lobby, so it was held chez Hawks.

Cuppa and a Cookie

Annie Hawkins has come up with yet another opportunity for parishioners and visitors to socialize: A cuppa and a cookie. That's a cuppa tea, to be specific, and the fare was a little heartier than a cookie. Check the calendar for upcoming Cuppa sessions, which are currently being held monthly.

Dr Who 50th Anniversary

In observance of the 50th Anniversary of Dr Who, the flowers on the altar were given by the Choirmaster in memory of William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton & Jon Pertwee. The arrangements were designed by Anne Hawkins. "Who" says Anglicans don't have a sense of humor?

Cookie Walk 2013

The 2013 Cookie Walk was another rousing success: a wide variety of homemade cookies; new flavors of jams and jellies, plus all the favorites from past years; Christmas pudding with hard sauce; a stunning assortment of hand-knitted goods for the silent auction; and, of course, Santa himself. The weather held out: we had beautiful weather. (The snow didn't come in until the next day.) Make sure to mark your calendars for next year's Cookie Walk.
