The use of Thee and Thou is still quite common in Yorkshire, although Standard English as used by the BBC, is gaining ground.
The Queen speaks a Royal Family form of English, with an attentuated pronounciation.
There are a number of forms of English, and I was startled yesterday in the Bar des sports whilst having a beer, to hear English being spoken, and with what seemed to be a North American accent. It turned out that the speaker was from the Netherlands and did not speak much French, so was speaking with his French companion in the Dutch form of English which has an intonation similar to the North American one.
It is my experience that there are a number of forms of English and my only concern has been to ensure understanding.
The quality of style of English seems unimportant if what is written is understandable. The problem is that the King Jame’s version of the Bible is no longer easily understood and the same can be said for any ancient English texts.I use the New English Bible in English and the Jerusalem Bible in French, and for the New Testament check with the Koine Greek text. In the latter, the differences of Greek style are apparent, but again the important issue is the understanding.
