Choral Evensong upon Advent Sunday

The First Sunday in Advent

Advent Starry NightEvensong, a fusion of the monastic prayer offices Vespers and Compline, is one of the greatest treasures of the Anglican tradition. Presented by Saint Stephen’s Choir of Men & Boys on the First Sunday of the Month, the service begins at 6:00 PM and ordinarily lasts about 40 minutes.

This month’s service will reflect the mystery and anticipation of the Advent season. Music will include a setting of the Preces & Responses adapted from works of G. P. da Palestrina; T. Tertius Noble’s Evening Service in B minor; Paul Manz’s ‘E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come’; and the hymns ‘Come, thou Redeemer of the earth’ and ‘Lo! he comes with clouds descending’. The service will conclude with J. S. Bach’s organ chorale prelude ‘Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland’, BWV 661.

Visitors from all faiths are always heartily welcomed to join us in prayer, and all are invited to remain for a light reception following the service. Admission is free of charge, however a freewill offering will be received in aid of the choir’s charity, the Christ Child Society of Baltimore.
