Saint Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln
Posted by petrus, on November 17th, 2020
Altarpiece from the Carthusian monastery of Saint-Honoré, Thuison-les-Abbeville, France, depicting Saint Hugh of Lincoln with his swan. O merciful Father, who didst endow thy servant Hugh of Lincoln with a wise and cheerful boldness, and didst teach him how to commend the discipline of holy life to kings and princes: Grant that we, fearing only thy displeasure, may learn to speak the truth with boldness in the name of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
¶ Or this:
O merciful Father, who didst endow thy servant Hugh of Lincoln with a wise and cheerful boldness, and didst teach him how to commend the discipline of holy life to kings and princes: Give us grace like him not only to be bold, but to have just cause for boldness, even the fear and love of thyself alone; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
