Denim Day

Susanna and the Elders Artemisia Gentileschi

Susanna and the Elders, by Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1656), the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. From Wikipedia.

Almighty God, who seest all things, and knowest all that men do: Comfort and strengthen all them that have been sexually assaulted in any degree. Make us to hear them and believe them, and bring them the help and understanding they need to deal with their trauma. Grant them the healing blessings of thy Holy Spirit, that they may live in peace and security; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In 1998, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the 1992 conviction of a man accused of rape, because the victim wore “very, very tight jeans”, and so “she had to help him remove them… and by removing the jeans… it was no longer rape but consensual sex”. Wearing jeans on Denim Day is a protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
