O God, who hast made heaven and earth and all that is in them: We humbly beseech thee to bless and hallow these first–fruits of wheat, and to multiply them abundantly for us who offer them; and grant such seasonable weather that this year’s harvest may be plentiful, and we, rejoicing in thy gifts, may pay our thanks to thy divine majesty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
¶ Or this:
O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast taught us that man doth not live by bread alone: Feed us, we humbly beseech thee, with the true Bread that cometh down from heaven, even thyself, O blessed Saviour; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
“Lammas”, from the Old English “hlafmæsse” (“loaf mass” or “bread festival”) is a “feast of first fruits” celebrating the wheat harvest. It has been celebrated as such since the early centuries of the church. (In the Celtic calendar, it also marks the beginning of Autumn, being one of the Quarter Days. The British Isles are a lot farther north than the Mid–Atlantic states, remember.)
